INDIGENOUS COMMUNICATIONS & MEDIA SURVEY
IT’S ALL ABOUT OUR OWN PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences engage with their radio services because it reflects their communities and peoples. The Australian Indigenous Communications and Media Survey conducted in late 2016 has shown that local news, local people and the positive focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues are reasons people listen in.  Community based and independent, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander radio creates a sense of place through its direct location in communities and its participatory nature.  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander radio is clearly about our own people and about our own community.

KLUB KOORI CELEBRATES NAIDOC
Themed ‘Our Languages Matter’ in 2017, NAIDOC Week and Klub Koori celebrate the importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Klub Koori, a vibrant presentation of unique Aboriginal live music performances, returns to Carriageworks in Sydney on Thursday 6 July in 2017 with an all female line-up headlined by the award winning Casey Donovan. Showcasing emerging and established Aboriginal musicians, the line-up includes Jess Beck, Mi-Kaisha Masella and Thaylia. Klub Koori coincides with NAIDOC Week 2017. CELEBRATE NAIDOC WEEK
The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2-9 July 2017. This year's theme - Our Languages Matter - aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song. Some 250 distinct Indigenous language groups covered the continent at first (significant) European contact in the late eighteenth century. Most of these languages would have had several dialects, so that the total number of named varieties would have run to many hundreds.
Today only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass on. Support NAIDOC Week and join the celebrations that take place across the nation.
CHECK OUT THE NAIDOC EVENTS CALENDAR
OUR LANGUAGES MATTER ON ICTV
ICTV has a special week of programming planned for NAIDOC Week this year. In keeping with the 2017 NAIDOC theme ‘Our Languages Matter’,  ICTV will be showcasing a wide variety of languages. From July 2- 9, every program on ICTV will be in an Indigenous language or on the topic of Indigenous languages.
