RECONCILIATION WEEK / BLACK LIVES MATTER
It has been another huge month for the First Nations media sector and we are incredibly proud of the work being broadcast and published across the country. As thousands of people took to the streets of our towns and cities, First Nations media workers were there to cover the rallies, to offer their perspectives and to share their knowledge with mainstream media programs. Reconciliation Week 2020 was tough for many of us. The theme of this year has particular resonance - #InThisTogether. The reality is as First Nations media workers we can be more ‘in this’ than others. We tell their stories, we work to shine a light into the darkest, dankest corners of Australia’s racist shadows. And it can take a personal toll on the media workers who tell these stories and we must recognise that. First Nations Media Australia has been working to support our members in undertaking this work and to amplify your stories.
REPORTING ON TRAUMA
In the lead-up to the Black Lives Matter protests and conversations about deaths in custody escalating, First Nations Media Australia supported journalists reporting on these very difficult matters with a webinar held on Friday 5 June. Wiradjuri man and acclaimed journalist, Stan Grant shared his personal experiences of reporting from the frontline and his processes for coping with traumatic topics. The webinar covered how to look after yourself and your community in reporting on matter that impact the people around you. A recording of the discussion and the Q&A with members is available to view on our website if you missed it. Read more.
ARCHIVING WEBINARS
In other webinar news, we have been moving ahead with our webinar series, Getting Started with Your Archive. So far Daniel has covered an introduction and the next steps across two webinars held on 7 May and 11 June. Recordings of those webinars are available on our website here.
The next webinar for this series will run on Wednesday 15 July featuring two case study examples to talk about. Register here.

THE NEW NORMAL
While COVID-19 is still a risk, many areas of life are starting to return to normal with travel restrictions easing and people returning to workplaces. We have continued to keep our COVID-19 website up to date with new information and announcements as they roll out. It has been mainly good news to share with your audiences lately! We have worked with the Northern Territory Government to have our NT-based members produce materials on the changes to biosecurity area restrictions. We have encouraged the Queensland Government to work with our members there on updated COVID-19 messaging. And we continue to work closely with the NIAA on an ongoing basis.

As we transition back to full use of our studios and workspaces, it’s important to remember to maintain our extra hygiene measures and to stick to your pandemic policy. It might be worth revisiting your plan and making sure your cleaning routines are still going well. Now is a good time to start thinking about when to start allowing guests into your studios and how that might be best managed to maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres. Although the restrictions are easing, we still need to protect our teams and our communities, so keep up the new routines.

CONGRATULATIONS MYERS!
Congrats to our IT Trainee, Myers Sandy for completing his certificate based in the IT department. What a great achievement during a time like this.

We are looking forward to seeing Myers bring his new set of skills to the table as he continues to work in our inDigiMOB team.

Myers has been doing some great work with inDigiMOB Digital Mentor, Steve Tranter on the Words to Music competition. Check out the deadly video they have made here.

TECH SUPPORT FOR MEMBERS
First Nations Media tech, Ben Pridmore headed out to Yuendumu to help PAW Media with their network recently. Ben replaced all switches and routers. PAW has 4 internet connections which are now load balancing and an automatic failover - if one internet line drops out all users will automatically be changed to a working connection. Network traffic for PAW’s stream to Imparja is prioritised to ensure a clear and reliable feed. All equipment installed can be remotely monitored and configured from the cloud and via VPN access. A few VLANs (virtual local area network) were created for admin, staff and radio to separate network traffic. Check out Ben's handiwork below.

This month Ben has also been helping PAKAM and TSIMA with email server support and assisting the team at CAAMA with a live music OB series. Ben's knowledge is available as a resource to all FNMA members, so get in touch with him if you need some tech support.

MANDATORY NEWS MEDIA BARGAINING CODE
First Nations Media Australia submitted a joint response with the CBAA to the ACCC’s Concepts Paper on a Mandatory News Media Bargaining Code. The ACCC is considering how Google and Facebook interact with news content in Australia and possible legislation options relating to the sharing of news media. Our submission addressed some definitional issues in determining news content and access to information. It encouraged the ACCC to consider community and First Nations media organisations alongside commercial news outlets. Read more.
