FNMA News
Over the past couple of months, First Nations Media Australia has farewelled some staff members and welcomed some new faces on board.

In March, First Nations Media Australia said goodbye two of our longest serving staff members, Chief Operations Officer Jennifer Nixon and Membership & Executive Assistant Support Stephanie Stone. Jenni was with First Nations Media Australia for eight years, from when the peak body was known as the Indigenous Remote Communications Association, IRCA, and Steph worked for IRCA and FNMA over the past seven years.

In April, Steve Hodder, FNMA’s Archiving & Digitisation Coordinator, left FNMA to become a Television News Producer at ICTV, and Communications Officer David Liddle, took up a position as News Editor at CAAMA Radio. Also, in May, FNMA’s Archiving & Digitisation Coordinator, Penny Watson, FNMA’s News Initiative’s Regional Editorial Coordinator, Kirstyn Lindsay and Regional Editor, Rachael Hocking also left FNMA to pursue other opportunities.

FNMA thanks these staff members for their contributions and wishes them all the best in their next ventures.

We are pleased to announce that Mikayla Friday-Shaw has been promoted to Membership & Executive Assistant Support, Steve Tranter to the position of FNMA’s Archiving & Digitisation Coordinator. We also extend a very warm welcome to Lyall Ware-Campbell, who recently started as indigiMOB Project Officer, and Dr Robin Gregory, who began working as part-time Research Policy Officer in March. Reece Lamshed, who will be joining back on the News Sharing Initiative Project and Liam Kenna, as FNMA's new Principal Project Officer in late May.
FNMA Preparing to move into New Office in Alice Springs!
FNMA is excited to announce, that our staff has almost finished moving into the new FNMA Office in Alice Springs NT, a process that has been in train for 2–3 years. FNMA would like to commend the internal staff, who have worked hard over the last couple of weeks, to move everything from the 2/70 Elder St building into the new office on Todd Mall. We hope to have more information about the Office Opening soon, so keep an eye out on FNMA Comms. If you're ever in Alice Springs, please make sure to drop by the new office and to say hello to the friendly staff at FNMA.

The Voice Project
NIAA has consulted with FNMA since the beginning of the year about a prospective role for FNMA’s membership in providing civics education on the Referendum Process for the First Nations Voice to Parliament.  The project will provide factual information to First Nations communities, and by extension the broader public, about the Voice (both the ‘yes’ and the ‘no’ case), the referendum process, and the Australian Constitution. The activity seeks to maximise inclusion of First Nations Media Australia membership, other broadcasters and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences in Voice Referendum information provision.

Moving forward, FNMA is pleased to report that we have made significant progress in our campaign efforts. Specifically, we have identified First Nation talent for the 'voice overs', and our team has drafted the necessary scripts for the project. We are currently awaiting approval from the department, and we expect to receive it soon.

As part of the project, we would like to provide you with the option to use the developed assets or to use the drafted script to do your own voice over, either with your own local talent or in your local languages. This will help to ensure that the project is representative of the diversity and richness of our communities.

It’s important to get the facts straight before you vote. FNMA has produced a media package for First Nations media orgs to use to promote awareness about the facts about the Voice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The packages will be available soon and include:
  • Radio spots for broadcast.
  • Scripts you can produce with local talent and in local languages.
  • Fact sheets on the Voice.

FNMOs can send an EOI to apply for a package to participate in this project. Funds are available for participating orgs.

The Information Booklet can be found here or you can view the Resources Referendum on an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice here.

Deadline for Expressions of Interest is Wednesday 31 May 2023.
Social media tiles and more content will be available soon!

To participate in the project or for more information, please contact Membership & Executive Assistant Mikayla Shaw.

News Sharing Initiative: Common Threads Summit
Training Coordinator Kirstyn Lindsay attended the Common Threads Summit in Meanjin (Brisbane) in late March.

We were welcomed to Yuggera and Turrbul country by Aunty Deb Sandy and her family who shared beautiful the cultural history of the traditional landscape of the region.

The summit was hosted by GetUp and Australian Progress and was developed to build on the strength of First Nations-led campaigns and movements for justice and self-determination. This was a valuable opportunity to reconnect with campaigners and community organisers and gain inspiration to elevate the program training in the direction the nationwide movement and sector is heading towards. Archive Project Update
This month there have been some staffing changes in the Archiving Project. Dennis Charles has been promoted and will replace Steve Hodder, who has taken up a position at ICTV in the news team. Steven Tranter will be moving across from InDigiMob to replace Penny Watson as Archiving Team Manager. Penny is taking up a position with AIATSIS in Collections and will continue to work with the archiving team but in a different capacity. The team is looking forward to the move into the new building but in the meantime Steve Tranter and Dennis Charles are focussed on digitising existing collections and repairing unplayable tapes.
inDigiMOB Team
The inDigiMOB team has been busy finishing up our Online Safety project (a partnership between FNMA and eSafety Commissioner). The team have one more visit to South Hedland organisations early next month.
Issues that have been common to the communities engaged have been:
  • Cyber bullying
  • Dealing with strangers online
  • Fake profiles
  • Image-based abuse
  • Keeping personal info secure
  • Online gaming
  • Posting content online
  • Romance and other scams
The team now has a good toolbox of resources and supports to help regional and remote organisations and participants navigate these issues.

inDigiMOB has also had some change in staff. Chantal has sadly (for us) moved on to pursue her own personal business. However, we have had Lyall Ware-Campbell join the team! Lyall is a Gugada, Wirangu, Narunga bloke from Ceduna, SA. He has media and training delivery experience and is looking forward to working with FNMA as part of the inDigiMOB team.
