| First Sounds launches another set of blistering-hot tracks with the release of Volume 6. In partnership with First Nations Media Australia and the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA), the latest volume features 12 tracks, giving new and emerging First Nations artists the opportunity to have their music played on the airwaves.
Promoting artists from Djugun (Broome) to Boonwurrung (Mornington Peninsula),
from Yindjibarndi (Roebourne) to Noongar (Perth), Kauruna (Adelaide) and the Anmatjere/Warlpiri (Central Desert), the expressive voices of First Nations music makers are compiled into one album. Focussing on sounds from blues, RnB, rap, country, desert rock, reggae and dance, the album transverses powerful stories about life and loss, strength and healing and the experiences of being First Nations in so-called Australia. Two songs on the latest compilation feature in language from Anmatjere and Warlpiri Country, and Noongar Country, providing for a diverse range of music.
Taylah J
from Stone Moth, debuts on VOL.6 with her single White Lies, a literate rap that exposes an educated view about colonisation, social justice and racism, past and present. Collaborating with Uncle Kev Starkey, her mentor, guardian, and producer, Taylah J was excited to be selected for the latest First Sounds album.
“Being selected to be a part of the (First Sounds Volume 6) is incredible, and what I consider an Honour. White Lies is my Debut Single, in which I collaborated with Uncle Kev Starkey, and to be able to spread our message amongst such amazingly talented artists in this Compilation, is
humbling to say the least.”
First Sounds delivers fresh Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music to community radio with the album distributed to over 250 community radio stations and broadcasters, creating awesome exposure for our emerging First Nations artists. All eligible entries are listened to by a selection panel of leading First Nations music industry leaders including Emily Wurramara, Dallas Woods, Fred Leone and Shellie Morris from which 12 tracks will be chosen.
AMPLIFY // Mentor Program Announcement
First Sounds has ramped up in 2021 to also support artists to further develop their music through a new mentoring program. AMPLIFY kicked off in August with some of the deadly emerging artists from the 2020 First Sounds compilations. The five selected are Boox Kid, Rachael Lia, Yirgjhilya, Jamahl Ryder and Nathan May. The program will finish with a song writing workshop and a nationally promoted gig in conjunction with the First Nations Media Awards in November on Kaurna sacred lands, restrictions permitting. The following artists have joined the digital component of AMPLIFY; Aimee Hannan, Murringaahddi, Maurial Spearim, Nathaniel Sims, Donovan Rice, Jeffrey James Black and Mack Ridge.
Amplify is stoked to have some awesome leaders in the
black music industry backing these artists, including Emily Wurramara, Kobie Dee and Mau Power.
Kobie Dee, a Gomeroi rapper, who recently released his new single “About A Girl”, which is a confronting yet powerful story about a young girl trapped in a world of violence, addiction and abuse said,
"I love being part of the Amplify Program and supporting new talent coming through. I think it’s really important programs like this exist to help mentor mob to pursue their dreams and have a go”.
AMPLIFY artists will get together for yarn sessions, knowledge sharing, contacts and experiences to get their music out.
This project has been assisted by the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body, and the Community Media Training Organisation (CMTO).
