This year’s Media Award nominations are now open … and we’ve made some changes!
Our annual media awards celebrate the value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media and broadcasting in Australia. The awards have been restructured into two categories this year to include national representation with our recent expansion to national peak body; the Remote Indigenous Media Awards and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Media Awards. The new award categories ensure that excellence and emerging talent across the national and remote sector are recognised.

Nominations are now open to submit entries for both categories. Winners of the Remote Indigenous Media Awards will be presented at the 19th Remote Indigenous Media Festival in Irrunytju (Wingellina) 25-30 September. Winners of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Media Awards will be announced at our inaugural ceremony at the National Industry Conference in Brisbane 7-9 November.

Remote media organisations, workers and stakeholders are invited to join the annual meeting ground for the 19th Remote Indigenous Media Festival. Network, learn, celebrate and build the capacity of our media industry from 25 to 30 September. This year we are headed to the desert community of Irrunytju (Wingellina) WA, home of our co-host NG Media who are celebrating their 25th Anniversary. Our Festival team have been out there this week planning with the community for the event.

Enjoy the ceremonies, award presentations, film screenings and concerts. Get involved in the industry forums and skills workshops. Check out the 19RIMF PROGRAM and book early as spaces are limited. Preference is given to remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media workers and organisations. #RIMF2017

Broadband for the Bush Indigenous Focus Day
The Broadband for the Bush Indigenous Focus Day was held on Wednesday 21 June 2017 in Fremantle, Perth WA. It provided a space for yarning, sharing experiences and developing strategies for appropriate and affordable communications access for remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations. A key recommendation was that Indigenous Digital Inclusion be established as a Closing the Gap measure.

The Communique and Media Release for the Broadband for the Bush Forum VI held on 22-23 June 2017 are now available.

CONVERGE COMMUNIQUE RELEASED

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander media workers and organisations from across Australia met up at CONVERGE, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Media Summit in Alice Springs 22-24 May 2017.

Delegates committed to the development of a Communique to Government addressing the sector's concerns about the lack of updated policy and funding growth since the mid 1990s, and consequent capacity challenges to meet new audience needs and incorporate new technologies. The Communique, developed from delegate input at the Summit, is now available.

FROM THE 2016 AUDIENCE SURVEY

Our radio listeners come from across the whole community.
Remote radio has high acceptance across all the demographic groups in remote communities. The regular listener demographic of RIMO Radio (80% of the survey population) aligns closely with their representation in the population indicating remote radio’s ability to reach a wide audience, as well as provide content for all groups. NEW WEB SERIES

Congratulations to Sylvia Tabua from Torres Strait Islanders Media Association (TSIMA) and the other Torres Strait Islander filmmakers for the two new factual web series funded as part of Straight out of the Straits, an Australian-first partnership between Screen Queensland, Screen Australia and ABC iview.

Dinghy Gurls, directed by Sylvia Tabua and Shanice Tabua, is a four-part factual series while the series Yatha Pathayk: Coming of Age will be directed by Jimi Bani about the cultural journey of 15-year-old Dmitri Ahwang from Mabuiag Island in the Torres Straits.

WALKALI RETURN TO COUNTRY TRIP

On 21-27 May, the Pilbara & Kimberley Aboriginal Media (PAKAM) team, Clint Dixon, Quinton Milner, Ronald Mosquito and Magali McDuffie, were privileged to cover the Walkali Return to Country Trip. It was a very emotional return to country for some community members who had not been there in more than 20 years, or whose grand-parents were from there but never had the chance to return. PAKAM look forward to showing you the finished film!

NAIDOC REVIEW

NAIDOC Week was celebrated 2-9 July. Congratulations to everyone for the outstanding broadcasts and activities around the country. The IRCA crew joined the NAIDOC march and celebrations in Alice Springs NT. The live Outside Broadcast was pumping from the CAAMA truck as the desert bands performed. There were lots of great stalls from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations including ICTV and Batchelor Institute.

Accelerate is a tailored leadership skills development program run by the British Council to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working within the creative industries with the skills and networks to generate, take up and excel in leadership positions. The program is aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts professionals from across Australia who have at least five years experience in the creative industries and can demonstrate a bold vision for where they want to take their career and their community.

ABORIGINALS BENEFIT ACCOUNT (ABA) GRANT FUNDING

The next ABA beneficial grants funding round will open Monday 31 July 2017. In order to support organisations to prepare an application, an example of the application form and grant guidelines are now available, and can be downloaded and printed. Early access to the guidelines and application form will provide organisations more time to fully consider requirements and start planning their funding requests.

KARDAJALA KIRRIDARRA ALBUM

Kardajala Kirridarra (Sandhill Women) have won the NT Song Of The Year Award, played at Golden Plains, Wide Open Spaces and Barunga Festivals, and were the first all female band to appear at Bush Bands Bash in 2016. They have released their new single Ngabaju (Grandmothers Song) and are in the final exciting stages of finishing and releasing their premier album. Kardajala Kirridarra are running a Kickstarter campaign to help them get there.
