MABO DAY 3 JUNE 2019
MABO
NEW RELEASE TODAY FROM YOTHU YINDI & THE TREATY PROJECT
As evidenced by Yothu Yindi’s success in the 1990’s, Indigenous music, song and dance are powerful tools of protest. Today Yothu Yindi & The Treaty Project have released the music video to their new single MABO, raising awareness and cultivating support across Australia for the need for treaty with Australia’s First Nations people.

Mabo Day commemorates the courageous efforts of Eddie Koiki Mabo to overturn the fiction of terra nullius (land belonging to no-one), the legal concept that Australia and the Torres Strait Islands were not owned by Indigenous peoples. This idea was used to give ‘legitimacy’ for the British and later colonial and Australia governments to allow the dispossession of all Indigenous peoples of their land and access to it.

Koiki Mabo and his legal team fought hard to demonstrate that he and his people had traditional land ownership systems on Mer. The case went to the High Court. Unfortunately Eddie Mabo died 5 months before the historic decision came on 3 June 1992 that ‘native title’ did exist and it was up to the people of Mer to determine who owned the land.
ACKNOWLEDGING SORRY DAY, NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK AND MABO DAY.
PROUD MABO GRANDDAUGHTER
Singer-songwriter, Kristal West, is the granddaughter of the legendary land rights activist, Eddie Mabo, who campaigned for ten years to eventually have the legal doctrine of terra nullius overturned. Her life centres around her music and her people. Kristal has determination, passion and drive like her late grandfather, unwavering from her dreams. Listen to her track And That’s Why on the Alukura compilation here.
FROM A WHISPER TO A BANG!
During National Reconciliation Week, Episode 5: Defending Country, was released as part of the podcast series made for the Australian War Memorial, recognising that First Nations people have served in every conflict, peacekeeping and humanitarian operation in which Australia has been engaged. As soldiers they were equals, sharing very similar experiences. Back home it was a different story. Defending Country explores the extraordinary yet unheralded story of Indigenous service and sacrifice for Australia.
THE CONVERSATION CONTINUES
The Indigenous Hip Hop Show from Koori Radio features Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists who are keeping the national conversation surrounding Indigenous affairs current. Artists are talking up and keeping culture alive. Catch tracks from Briggs, Birdz, Skinny Fish Sound System, Dan Sultan, Lady Lash, Daen and DRMNGNOW, including track features from B2M, Mojo Juju, Kev Carmody and A.B.Orginal.
SNAKE DREAMING
National Sorry Day is held on 26 May each year to acknowledge and recognise the Stolen Generations. This short film from Jonas Dare about Stolen Generations is told by children who learnt the history from their grandmothers.
GROUNDED IN TRUTH
WALK TOGETHER WITH COURAGE
Black Rock Band, driven to promote change for the next generation, took the stage with Archie Roach and Shane Howard in Melbourne at the Children's Ground event last week in recognition of National Reconciliation Week.
TALKING TREATY
Dr Donna Odegaard AM from Aboriginal Broadcasting Australia talks with Prof. Mick Dodson about treaty. Australia is still without a treaty with our First Nations people. A treaty in Australia could recognise our people's history and prior occupation of our country, as well as the injustices of colonisation.
